Three group insurance plans are offered by CJA, chosen by the Compensation & Retirement Committee to provide specialized coverage for judges and their families:
Disability: The Judges Retirement System provides an annuity of 65% (taxable) to judges who become disabled while in office. However, unless the disability is clearly service-related, there is a 5-year waiting period before new judges are covered. To fill that gap, CJA offers a policy underwritten by Standard Insurance Company of Portland, Oregon. This policy pays 66.67% of your judicial salary (tax-free).

Term Life: As a new CJA member, you are eligible for $100,000 of term life insurance with no medical screening if you enroll within 60 days of joining the association. Your spouse is eligible for $10,000. Standard Insurance Company underwrites this group policy. Additional coverage is available with simplified medical screening.

Long-term Care protects against spending down your assets due to the expense of nursing or extended care. Coverage is available for judges, their spouses/domestic partners, and extended family members. Monthly benefits are paid in full without interference from ‘managed care’ decision-makers. The policy is underwritten by UNUM Life Insurance Company of America, one of the country’s largest insurance companies and oldest disability underwriter.

Critical Illness Supplemental Insurance: While most members have good major medical insurance, when a serious medical event occurs it just may not be enough. This supplemental program will help with the hidden costs of a serious illness – travel for treatment, lodging, co-pays, deductibles, miscellaneous out of pocket expenses, lost wages of spouse or member. This Critical Illness plan will provide a financial safety net when a member, their spouse or child under age 26 is faced with a covered critical illness.

Genomic Life: Did you know that 1 in 6 individuals are born with a potentially serious genetic health risk?
Your genome may be the most important factor driving your health, but it is often the most ignored. Understanding your unique genome can help predict future risk, inform treatment, and drive high-impact approaches to optimize your health. As a part of your Genomic Life membership, you have access to a clinical grade genetic testing that is mailed directly to your home to include:

Excess Liability Insurance Coverage: Your auto, homeowner, and watercraft policies may not provide enough protection in the event of a serious loss. You can get additional coverage from an excess liability policy. Coverage under this type of policy is in excess of your primary insurance. For example, if you have a car accident, your primary auto insurance policy would be your first level of coverage, and Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance from Chubb would be the final level of coverage after all other applicable policy limits are exhausted. Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance from Chubb provides additional liability coverage, up to $50 million, for damages and costs you or a covered family member have to pay in a covered lawsuit. (Currently this plan is only available to sitting judge and justice CJA members.)
